Picture of the 2005 sounding boardDid you ever wonder if you can make a difference on a national level? You CAN! The group, known as the "Sounding Board," is a panel of young women (ages 14-17), just like yourself, with diverse backgrounds (including African American, Native American, Asian American, Mexican American, White, Jewish, Afghani, Russian, and a 2004 Paralympian!) They provide ongoing feedback on adolescent women’s health programs to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women's Health. This February, they came from all over the United States to Washington, DC, to meet each other. Check out who they are and read a little bit about them.

I am very proud to be a full Mexican girl with such a great family. I love running, and soccer is my favorite sport. I like to laugh a lot because I think that as long as I am happy and I enjoy every single moment of my life, I will have a healthy life. Likewise I try to eat healthy whenever I can. I have traveled to different countries, and I hope I would continue to do so. A few other things that I like include snowboarding, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family.

I live in Nebraska, which is a great state, and not just cows and corn! I love acting, singing, giving speeches, FFA, golfing, and of course shopping! Things that are very important to me are my family, friends, heritage (I'm half Afghani), and education. But the most important thing to me is my voice and right to have that voice. We all have thoughts, ideas, and opinions. We shouldn't be afraid to share them. I try to stay healthy not only by eating right and exercising, but by having a healthy attitude. I try to keep good relationships with people and be open to everyone from different walks of life.

I live in Oklahoma and I spend a lot of my time throughout the year dancing in Native American pow wows and traveling to pow wows in other states. I play varsity soccer and referee soccer, so it is important to keep my body healthy by eating healthy food. I try to stay away from fast food and drink water instead of soda. It is important to me to plan for a career in psychology, so I participate in Native American organizations focused on careers in medicine. My native culture is very important to me and keeps me grounded spiritually. Most of all I love my family and friends.

I am from the beautiful beaches on the panhandle of Florida in a little fishing town called Destin. I am 16 years old and I'm a sophomore honor student in high school. I play on the tennis team for my high school, and I absolutely love it. I stay healthy by eating lots of fruits and veggies, and I also try to exercise everyday! My family and friends mean the world to me and without them, I would be nothing. I love my life, and I am always trying new things so that everyday I can live life to the fullest!

My name is Tatyana McFadden. I am seventeen years old and I am a junior at Atholton High school in Columbia, Maryland. I am involved in outdoor track and the NHS (National Honors Society). Although I am paralyzed from the waist down and use a wheelchair, I am very athletic and involved in track and field, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, table tennis, downhill skiing and scuba diving. My two favorite sports are track and basketball. In 2004 I qualified to represent the USA at the Paralympics in Athens, Greece where I won a silver and a bronze medal in track. I am continuing my training and hope to go to the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, China. My interest in the Sounding Board is because I love helping people and am interested in pursuing a health related field in college. I also believe that I can add insight as a person with a disability who is active and healthy. This is a great opportunity for me to get involve and being a teenage girl myself, I feel that readers that are looking at this site will share similar experiences.
